OMGEVING is collaborating with Neutelings Riedijk Architects on the design of a ‘covered city’ in the halls of the Gare Maritime at the site of Thurn & Taxis in Brussels. This former freight station is being redeveloped by Extensa into a vibrant new city district. OMGEVING is responsible for the design of the indoor public space where various urban activities will unfold. The eye-catcher of the Gare Maritime is the impressive central hall, which remains completely open and provides space for a fresh market, a food hall and various activities. The central hall is flanked by two elongated inner gardens where urban food production (‘urban farming’) can take place. The renovation works of the shell started in 2016, the new construction works are planned for 2018.
