Church garden: Wetteren breaks out!

The new church garden in Wetteren will be one of the first realizations of the project call ‘Proeftuinen ontharding’ (experimental gardens for pavement reduction), launched by the Flemish government in 2018.

The demolition of a number of buildings near the church in the centre of Wetteren will make way for a church garden, an attractive place to stay that will also form a crucial and green connection between Markt and the river Scheldt. With this project, the municipality focuses on climate adaptation and mitigation in order to build a more climate robust and liveable town centre. The most important spearheads of the design are the buffering and infiltration of rainwater into attractive plant borders, the recovery of rainwater and the application of circular materials.

The public space was designed by OMGEVING in collaboration with OM\AR architects (demolition file) and BDA Engineering (stability). The implementation is planned for the autumn of 2020.
