Wechelderzande is a small village in the municipality of Lille, between Antwerp and Turnhout. Heavy traffic along the main access roads, underutilized property assets and outdated infrastructure prompted the municipal government to draw up a wish image for the village center. After OMGEVING drew up the Wishing Image for Wechelderzande in 2015, the town council decided to renovate some strategic spots in the village center. In a first phase, the park around the Hof D’Intere was renewed.

In a second phase, the village center around the church, Heymansstraat and the little square at den Hert were redesigned. The ambition was to strengthen the green character of the village and increase the quality of living. The new design aims to increase accessibility and traffic safety for pedestrians and cyclists in the village center.

The green village center will be formed by softening and greening the area around the church. After demolition of the former school, a new square space will be created along Oostmalsebaan. The old church garden will be enlarged and restored to its former glory. The garden is planted with a large variety of perennials that form an ideal biotope for insects and small animals, but where there is also room for rainwater collection. The small square around the monumental trees in den Hert was redesigned into a pleasant place to stay. A new, larger planting area creates more space for the trees. New future trees were planted in several locations.
