The temporary design for the Hogeweg square in Berchem, also known as the Arts Square, kicks off the planned developments in the neighbourhood. Based on a building block study, the square will be finished off with a gate building and the west side will be provided with an additional extension. As a result, the square will have a new framework which will improve both the accessibility of the square and the connection to the surrounding buildings.
The Arts Square visualizes these planned developments and makes the site publicly accessible. Rows of wooden poles symbolize the future construction lines, overgrown wires refer to the gatehouse and the future public passage is represented by an elongated wooden staircase and slope. A tribune creates the opportunity to have an outdoor arts class for the adjacent Art Academy.
The square has been realized with a limited budget through a design & build assignment for a period of three to five years.
