As part of the development of the station area, the new bypass between E19 and N15 will redirect the car-flow of the southern part of the Vesten in Mechelen. In that case, the Vesten can be used as a distribution road for local traffic. This new role creates space for a green public area with a restored balance between accommodation and traffic, and for a high-quality carrier of public transport.
Commissioned by the city of Mechelen, OMGEVING developed an ambitious plan for the first part of the Vesten park: Speecqvest. The park now again resembles the situation of the end of the 19th century, just after the dampening of the city canal. A park promenade with long, winding paths unfolds between groups of trees. A cycle lane runs through the park and also a playground and a small football field have been integrated. An underground car park with 350 parking spaces has been integrated underneath the central park, which construction was adjusted to made it possible to plant large trees.
