Bredabaan is both a regional road as well as one of the major shopping streets of northern Antwerp. In the wake of the tram infrastructure being revamped, all the concerned parties seized the opportunity to overhaul this important shopping street. By giving public transport and pedestrian traffic priority over vehicular traffic, OMGEVING and Technum managed to improve safety and enhance the quality of the streetscape.
Continuous granite paving provides a tranquil base upon which strategic spots deviate with a particular design. The Burgemeester Jozef Nolf Square that adjoins Bredabaan was transformed into a cohesive whole with elements of greenery and space where visitors can socialize and play. An elongated reflecting pool with playful fountains marks the entrance to the district town hall. With the tram rails moved, space has also been created across the street for terraces. A little further up Bredabaan, at the tram stop next to Bouckenborgh Park, one can now quickly and easily cross the street. A large number of different types of trees, distributed across the platforms, and new avenue trees on the islands create clarity and recognizability. In this manner Bredabaan has become a green and pleasant pedestrian shopping street.
