In 2019, OMGEVING was commissioned to transform the burial sites in Nijlen and its boroughs Kessel and Bevel into park cemeteries. Thanks to the master plans the graveyards transform into parks with a diversity of greenery. Each of them will function as a stepping stone in the bigger blue-green network. The goal of these plans is to create an attractive setting with enough resting places to encourage people to linger in the park.
At the large cemetery in Nijlen, the project went further. Park functions are integrated throughout the cemetery. The central zone, where space is being given to an important slow crossing, will be provided with play features. The cemetery is being restructured to give the various forms of burial after cremation a dignified place. A clear house style brings further tranquillity and structure, and clearly indicates where each zone is located.
