Sports park Heizelplateau will be a unique park in a dynamic environment. The underlying linear topography of the Heizelplateau provides the opportunity to create detailed level differences in the park and to develop a strong green east-west axis. The green axis connects the neighbourhoods west of the park with Ossegem Park and Laken Park. At the same time, the green corridor is a place of destination, tranquility and experience; it formsan interplay between high-low, dynamic-quiet and shady-sunny. The starting point for the park is a landscaped and organic design that contrasts sharply with the rectilinear design of NEO/Europea. The park experience is maximised by long curves and offers interesting views. The two eastern formal avenues from the Atomium and Louis Steens Square are given a gradual transition to a flowing path structure. The new western entrances from Houba de Strooperlaanopen up from the street and clearly announce the park.
The park already has a number of guaranteed users: the clubs and associations that have or will have their place there, the existing residents in the surrounding neighbourhoods and the new residents in NEO/Europea. By compacting and concentrating the fenced-off sports areas to the maximum extent, an attempt was made to create the largest possible, clear, public and green space that defines the park’s identity.
