The study ‘Scaling Freshwater NbS in the Mekong subregion’ is conducted under the Climate Resilient by Nature (CRxN) Mekong Extension Project. This project focuses on protecting and restoring the Upper Mekong River and floodplain ecosystem by implementing NbS projects in Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam.

As a base for defining and locating NbS projects, challenges at the scale of the Mekong subregion were identified. Based on these challenges, three NbS case studies were selected and further developed in the region: Khum Chol Sar flooded forest restoration in Cambodia, Lang Sen flood-based agriculture in Vietnam and Goot Ting wetland restoration in Thailand. GIS analysis was used to assess how these NbS projects can be regionally scaled up for ecosystem restoration on a larger scale.

The three elaborated NbS case studies lay the foundation for protection and ecosystem restoration of the upper Mekong River through upscaling.
