The works on the Crossing of the Lys in Menen are part of the larger Seine-Schelde project which will connect two top regions in Europe. To ensure the passage of larger container and push ships, some infrastructure works are required near the centre of Menen. These works include widening and straightening the Lys, as well as replacing the existing centre bridge with a new, higher one and creating a new public space. OMGEVING, as a partner of the temporary trading company (THV) Doortocht Menen, has won the contract for the Lysworks in the centre of Menen. In the THV, three design and engineering offices join forces: SBE takes care of the hydraulic engineering, NEY & Partners takes on the design of the bridges and OMGEVING is responsible for the design of the public space.
The new public space should become a meeting place which city residents and visitors can enjoy along the waterfront. The design pays great attention to accessibility, thanks to ramps and stairs to reach the lowered areas. Another important aspect of the design is the green experience. The ambition is to achieve a balance between greenery and paving. The intensive green areas are complemented by extensive grassland and colourful green borders. This doesn’t only boost biodiversity, it also adds value to the green experience. The use of fairand sustainable materials reinforces the experiential value.
